Dear Teen Parent,
I could sit here and tell you how having sex before marriage is an abomination to some churches and society, but it really wasn’t anyone else’s decision but your own. Some people see no harm in engaging in this activity at our age because they’ve ultimately decided this for themselves that it’s their body and that their boyfriend/girlfriend is the one who’s special enough to have their virginity. And like every person in the world they have hormones and they believe their mature enough to handle this grown up activity. Than there’s people like me, which I’m not saying you should have my stand point when it comes to having sex, people who will cherish saving themselves for their husband/wife. They could either be religious or just have a moral value to themselves to wait to have sex till marriage. I’ve heard that marriage is sacred and if both spouses haven’t had sex there’s more of a uniqueness when sex does happen because their exploring themselves together. I mean it’s called making love so whether its premarital sex or sex when you’re married, just make sure you’re in love.
Obviously you didn’t think this situation close enough because now you’re in a predicament. Roe vs. Wade states that under the due process of the 14th amendment the woman has a choice to have an abortion. Legally this huge decision is all on you. Like most people, young girls aren’t even near ready to have a child, you can make a selfless act by giving your baby up for adoption into loving arms of a couple who the woman couldn’t conceive a child naturally and give them the greatest gift of all. Giving your baby up for adoption seems rough but ultimately you’d be giving that child what you wouldn’t be able to provide for at such a young age, yes a mother’s love would be unconditional but sometimes you have to put yourself first and wonder for the sake of this child, what would Jesus do? (Tyler Perry reference to his character Madea)
The second option there is for this unborn fetus is for you to take full on responsibility and care for this child giving her/him the best life you can give. Obviously this kind of responsibility isn’t meant for one person so whether you’re with the baby daddy or not get him involved because it took two to tango! If he refuses to help you and you were his “everything” but once he found out you were pregnant you were nothing to him than just take his ass to court. Legally if you took him to court the department of child services would issue a “you’ve been served” paper and after all the process of this paperwork you’d be entitled to money to help support this child until this child turned 18.
The third and most lethal option not only to this fetus but to your mental health is an abortion. I don’t care what the pro-life people say a fetus at any stage is a human life. From the beginning of conception this fetus is developing in the womb. Just like a seed to any plant, a baby is a considered a human being. Like a plant, a fetus is round and as time passes it starts to develop the nervous system just like a plant develops its roots, the central foundation. More time passes and the heart starts to beat just like a plant begins to bloom. Woman are like flowers, powerful evolutionary innovators created to reproduce, bringing new beginnings into this world. Aborting this child will not only kill the future doctor to find the cure, the scientist to finally fulfill our dreams of having the human race on another planet, etc. But it will also kill your mental health. Your outlook on life will be difficult. They say child birth is the most excruciating pain a woman can have, but to physically extract a living human being who may be the size of a peanut out of your vagina with medical tools.. I would have to assume that abortion ranks number 2 for worst pain.
In the end this is YOUR choice. While you outweigh the pros and cons of these options just remember in the end you’re going to be living with whatever you decide so chose wise. If you chose to deliver this baby to full term don’t let anyone tell you you’re less of a person just because you’re a teen mom, I mean these things happen and you either own up to it or not. And lastly I can sympathize for you in your circumstance, my cousin who I consider a sister because we’ve grown up together, she's 18 and is about to have her baby this coming December 6th and at first when she told me she was pregnant I thought she was lying and asked, “are you sure it isn’t a food baby?” She’s taking a heavy load for only being 18 and going to college part time. It’s weird that when we were little kids we would play house together and pretend teddy bears were the children and we were moms each of us having a teddy bear as our child, but now she’s not playing pretend. Kids are having kids.. a kind of weird epidemic.
